Town Hall Overview:
Today, we will be diving into the world of point of care recovery solutions and exploring the alternatives they provide for pain management. In this session of the NAOHP Town Hall, Dr. Larry Earl introduces Scott Lowe, the managing partner at W.R.S. Work Team Rehab Solutions. Together, they discuss the importance of avoiding opioids and the role that non-narcotic solutions, such as cold compression therapy and wearable ultrasound, can play in pain relief and recovery. Let’s explore these topics in more detail.
The Need for Non-Narcotic Solutions:
Opioid addiction and the associated epidemic have been persistent issues in pain management. The session begins with Dr. Larry Earl highlighting the concerns surrounding the overuse of opioids and the need for effective alternatives. He references a 2016 study which revealed a significant percentage of overdose deaths were linked to chronic pain resulting from work-related injuries and disability. The rise of opioid addiction prompted the search for non-narcotic options to alleviate pain and prevent the transition to chronic pain.
Introducing Cold Compression Therapy:
One of the key non-narcotic solutions discussed is cold compression therapy. Scott Lowe, the managing partner at W.R.S., emphasizes the effectiveness of this approach in pain management. Cold compression therapy combines cold therapy for pain relief and compression therapy for reducing swelling. It offers a safe and reproducible method for patients to manage their pain without relying on opioids.
Different Types of Cold Compression Therapy:
During the NAOHP Town Hall session, Scott explains the progression of cold compression therapy options. Starting with a simple bag of peas or a gel pack, the range extends to ice-based units that circulate or gravity-feed cold fluid through a wrap. However, the gold standard in home healthcare settings is an iceless system. This system utilizes thermoelectric technology to cool the fluid and deliver it through a wrap, allowing patients to receive safe and consistent therapy around the clock. Scott highlights the importance of intermittent compression to stimulate healing rather than static compression.
Wearable Ultrasound for Enhanced Healing:
Another exciting development in pain management is wearable ultrasound technology. This FDA-cleared solution provides patients with the opportunity to receive up to four hours of ultrasound therapy per day while remaining mobile. Wearable ultrasound has been extensively studied and has shown promise in promoting healing for overuse injuries, tendinitis, tendinosis, and strains. It is now being introduced as an alternative treatment modality in the workers’ compensation space.
Overcoming Challenges in Implementing Non-Narcotic Solutions:
During the discussion, Scott addresses some challenges faced by healthcare providers in implementing non-narcotic solutions. Traditional point of care pharmacy dispensing programs often struggle due to issues around reimbursement, out-of-network rates, and formulary restrictions. However, Scott emphasizes the importance of involving payers in discussions and providing payer-friendly alternatives. W.R.S. helps healthcare providers navigate these challenges through management services, software solutions, and inventory management.
Non-narcotic solutions, such as cold compression therapy and wearable ultrasound, offer effective alternatives to opioids for pain management. These solutions provide patients with personalized and convenient options that promote healing and overall well-being. Integrating these innovative technologies into healthcare practices requires addressing reimbursement and logistical challenges, but the benefits for patients and healthcare providers make it a worthwhile endeavor.
