OSHA Awards Grants in Occupational
Health and Safety Training
The Occupational Health and Safety Administration has awarded 10.5 million in training grants to non-profits around the nation. The grants, named after the late Director of the Office of Risk Assessment Susan Harwood, will be used for training and education on the recognition, prevention, and avoidance of risk in the workplace.
Some of the 2016 grantees include the Building Association of Hawaii, the Garment Worker
Center of Los Angeles, the New Mexico Direct Caregiver Coalition, and the Steelworkers Charitable and Educational Center in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. “Susan Harwood Training Grant Program is one of the most effective ways we have of communicating with vulnerable hard-to-reach workers in high-hazard industries who may not know how to avoid and prevent safety and health hazards in their workplace,” said the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. The New Mexico Direct Caregiver Association, for example, will use its $159,778 grant to provide four-hour training to small businesses, and hard-to-reach and minority healthcare workers on the specifics of ergonomics and blood-borne pathogens. The training will be conducted in Spanish.
